frica's biggest stadium was at capacity on Saturday as fans filled FNB Stadium in Nasrec for Scorpion Kings Live, a night that moved fluidly between hip-hop, Maskandi, Afro-soul and amapiano, and ended up feeling less like a single-genre festival than a showcase of the full range of South African music.
Ringo steals the spotlight
Veteran Ringo Madlingozi was one of the most talked-about names of the night, riding a wave of attention after a studio clip of him with the Scorpion Kings went viral in the weeks before the show. He performed hits Sondela and Ndiyagodola to a crowd full of younger fans singing along — something he said caught him by surprise. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, he described the night as a two-way exchange: his older songs reaching a new generation, and newer sounds like amapiano reaching him in return. He also confirmed a full studio collaboration with Maphorisa is now genuinely in motion.

Remembering those no longer here.
One of the night's more emotional moments came when Ami Faku performed Abalele while AI-generated images of musicians the industry has lost — including Riky Rick, Costa Titch, Killer Kau and Mpura — played on the big screen. The crowd's reaction was loudest for AKA and DJ Sumbody, a sign of how present their absence still is.
The mood then shifted into celebration when Faku returned for Asibe Happy, joined on stage by Msaki, Busiswa, Nkosazana Daughter, Lady Du, Thatohatsi and Kamo Mphela — turning the segment into an impromptu showcase of the women currently driving the genre. Kamo later told TshisaLIVE that her performing style is about reading the crowd and pacing the energy, rather than giving everything away at once, so people leave with a moment they'll actually remember.
Hosts and cameos
Robot Boii and Bontle Modiselle kept things moving as hosts throughout the night, handling the transitions between sets. Robot also got his own moment in the spotlight, taking a seat behind the drums alongside Nasty C during a performance of Leftie.

The Main Event.
As the night built toward its climax, Kabza De Small opened on piano alongside Toss, before moving to the decks with his longtime partner Maphorisa. The standout moment of the entire show came when Maphorisa drove his red BMW E30 325is — known on the streets as a Gusheshe — straight onto the stage, a nod to kasi car culture that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Behind the scenes
The scale of the night extended beyond the stage too. VIPs including Aymos, Ringo and his daughter Phila Madlingozi, Buhlebendalo and Cornet Mamabolo took in the show from the Super Suite, courtesy of sponsor Philip Morris. On the ground, a separate Veev activation promoting a smoke-free lifestyle ran alongside the main event, with DJs Amo Africa, Zane Gulston and Kyotic on the decks.
A handful of technical issues affected the microphones during a few performances, including Sykes' set, but didn't take much away from how the night was received overall. Fans who missed the live show can catch the full broadcast on SABC on October 3.
