Netflix’s Umthetho Brings Crime, Family and Betrayal to the Screen

Netflix has added another South African title to its growing collection of local productions with Umthetho, a crime drama that dives into the dangerous intersection of family, justice and the criminal underworld.

The series made its global debut on Netflix on 14 August 2026, introducing viewers to a story centred around a determined prosecutor whose professional world is turned upside down by a shocking family revelation.

At the heart of the drama is Mbali Dlamini, portrayed by Nqobile “Nunu” Khumalo. Mbali is a driven public prosecutor who finds herself confronted with a truth she never expected: her brother Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, is alive and has become a powerful figure within a prison syndicate.

The discovery pulls Mbali into a world that stands in direct opposition to the principles she has built her career around. Her younger brother Sphelele, played by Given Stuurman, is also caught up in the situation, forcing Mbali to navigate the increasingly difficult divide between her responsibilities as a prosecutor and her loyalty to her family.

As the pressure mounts, Umthetho examines what happens when personal relationships collide with the pursuit of justice. Mbali's choices carry serious consequences, putting not only her career but potentially her safety and freedom on the line.

The series brings together an impressive South African ensemble, featuring Sindi Dlathu, Sthembiso “SK” Khoza, Molefi Monaisa, Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, Ernest Msibi, Lungelo Madondo, Obed Baloyi and Mandla Gaduka, alongside Khumalo, Kgoroge and Stuurman.

Produced by Black Brain Pictures, Umthetho is directed by Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall. The series is adapted from the Brazilian Netflix crime drama Brotherhood, with the story reimagined within a distinctly South African setting and its own take on the country's prison environment.

While crime and suspense drive the narrative, Umthetho goes beyond the traditional crime-drama formula. The series explores themes of family loyalty, corruption, justice and the difficult choices people make when their principles come up against the people they love.

Set against the backdrop of Johannesburg, the series uses the city and its surroundings to enhance its gritty atmosphere while building a story around characters caught between the law and the criminal world.

With its high-stakes storyline, prison-based setting and established South African cast, Umthetho adds another locally produced crime thriller to Netflix's expanding South African catalogue.
