BLACK COFFEE WINS R7 MILLION COURT BATTLE AGAINST MASERATI SOUTH AFRICA South African Grammy Award-winning DJ and producer Black Coffee has won a R7 million legal battle against Maserati South Africa after a dispute over an undelivered customised luxury sports car.
The Johannesburg High Court ordered Maserati South Africa to repay R7 million to Black Coffee’s company, Soulistic Music, following a dispute surrounding the purchase of a customised Maserati MC20 Cielo.
Black Coffee originally purchased a Maserati MC20 in 2022 for approximately R7 million. In 2024, he decided to trade in the vehicle for a customised MC20 Cielo, which was valued at around R9 million.
As part of the deal, his existing MC20 was valued at R7 million, with the remaining R2 million expected to be paid when the new vehicle was delivered.
However, the customised Maserati was never delivered.
The vehicle was expected to arrive around mid-2025, but production delays reportedly left the delivery date uncertain. With the new car still not delivered, Black Coffee sought to cancel the transaction and recover the R7 million value attached to his trade-in vehicle.
The dispute eventually made its way to the Johannesburg High Court, where Black Coffee’s company sought to recover the money tied up in the deal.
Maserati South Africa disputed aspects of the agreement, including the alleged delivery timeline, but the court ultimately ruled in favour of Soulistic Music.
The judgment ordered Maserati South Africa to repay the R7 million, together with interest and the legal costs associated with the case.
The legal victory means Black Coffee’s company is set to recover the value of the vehicle that was traded in as part of the deal, despite the customised replacement car never reaching him.
The case has since progressed beyond the initial judgment, with further legal steps reportedly being taken to enforce the payment owed by Maserati South Africa.
The ruling marks a significant victory for Black Coffee and his company following a dispute that began with what was supposed to be an upgrade to a customised Maserati MC20 Cielo.
